Floor insulation

With floor insulation the installer fits insulation material against the underside of the ground floor, working from the crawl space. For wooden floors, insulation wool or foam between the joists is common; for concrete floors, boards or sprayed foam against the underside. Nothing needs altering indoors — the work happens beneath the floor.

For an average home you pay € 1,200 to € 2,800, including labour and materials. The floor surface and the accessibility of the crawl space drive most of the price: in a roomy crawl space with a hatch the crew works quickly, in a low or partly filled space it goes slower. You notice the direct result at the floor itself: warmer feet and less cold rising from the crawl space.

Is the crawl space too low to work in? Then ground insulation is often the alternative. State what you know about the crawl space in your request — height, hatch, damp — and the company quotes the right approach straight away. Good to know: a national insulation subsidy (ISDE) exists; the conditions change regularly, so ask the installer about the current scheme.
