Frequently asked questions

What does floor insulation cost?

For an average home you pay € 1,200 to € 2,800 for floor insulation, including labour and materials. Ground insulation of the crawl-space floor costs € 800 to € 1,800 and a crawl-space inspection with damp advice € 95 to € 350. The floor surface and the accessibility of the crawl space drive most of the price: a terraced house has roughly 40-60 m² of ground floor, a detached home well over double.

What is the difference between floor and ground insulation?

With floor insulation the material goes against the underside of the ground floor, from the crawl space — you insulate the floor itself. With ground insulation an insulating layer goes on the crawl-space floor — you insulate the space beneath. Floor insulation gives the most direct warm-feet effect; ground insulation is cheaper, also works in low or damp crawl spaces and additionally slows rising damp. Which one fits depends on the height and state of your crawl space.

Is my home suitable for floor insulation?

Floor insulation requires a passable crawl space under the ground floor: the crew works from below against the floor. If the crawl space exists but is too low or partly filled, ground insulation is usually the alternative. If there is no crawl space at all — for instance with a floor directly on sand or a modern foundation — there are other solutions. State what you know about the crawl space in your request, and the company decides the right approach.

Is a wooden floor insulated differently from a concrete floor?

Yes. A wooden floor often gets insulation wool or foam between the joists; a concrete floor gets boards or sprayed foam against the underside. The installer decides during the inspection which technique and material suit your floor. Don't know your floor type? That's fine — choose 'I don't know' in the request, the professional determines it on site.

Can I insulate if there is damp or water in the crawl space?

Not without care. An insulating layer on a wet floor or against a damp floor does not solve the underlying damp problem — sometimes it makes it worse. With a damp or wet crawl space a crawl-space inspection is the sensible first step: it reveals the cause and advises what needs to happen first. Ground insulation, incidentally, actually slows rising damp and is therefore often part of the solution. Always mention known damp problems in your request.

How does the work go and how disruptive is it?

Floor and ground insulation are done from the crawl space, beneath your floor — nothing needs altering indoors. The crew enters through the hatch, often located in the hall or a cupboard. For an average home the work is usually finished in a day or half a day. Make sure the hatch is freely accessible; otherwise you notice little of it during the work.

Is there a subsidy for insulation?

Yes, a national insulation subsidy exists (the ISDE scheme). The conditions and amounts change regularly, so we deliberately quote no figures here — ask the installer about the current scheme and have the quote name which measures qualify.

Do I need to ventilate differently after insulating?

Yes, pay attention to that. An insulated floor and crawl space keep heat in, but a tighter shell means damp air must leave more deliberately. Keep ventilation grilles open, let extraction run and never seal ventilation openings to stop draughts. With an insulated crawl space, the ventilation of that space itself also remains important — the installer advises on this.

Do you also do cavity-wall, roof or glass insulation?

No. This site focuses on the shell beneath the home: the ground floor and the crawl-space floor. Cavity-wall insulation is its own trade with its own site, roof insulation is roofers' work and insulating glass is window-frame work — for those you work with specialised companies from those trades.

Is a request really free and without obligation?

Yes. Submitting a request costs nothing and commits you to nothing. You receive up to 3 quotes and choose yourself — or no one, that's fine too. Prices and payment are arranged directly with the insulation company.

How fast will I get a response?

Insulation companies in your region respond as soon as possible with a price indication. In autumn, when the cold floor is noticeable again and the heating season begins, diaries are fullest — whoever places a request well in advance compares calmly and schedules the work at the preferred moment.

Are the companies vetted?

Yes. We verify Chamber of Commerce registration when a company joins and ask companies for proof of their business liability insurance. Companies with recurring complaints are removed from the platform.
